Joanne is a global director, along with Joanne Quinn and Michael Fullan, of New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL). The Learner First is supporting the implementation of NPDL in the Northwest Educational Service District 189 (NWESD) and the Puget Sound Educational Service District 121 (PSESD) in Washington State. The work has helped bring critical insights from some of the best school systems in the world to districts here in the US.
The Learner First worked alongside educators to change the role of teachers to that of activators of learning, proficient in designing learning experiences that build on learner strengths and needs, create new knowledge using real-world problem solving, and help students identify their talents, purpose and passion.
The Learner First’s partnership with NPDL, as well as it’s knowledge and experience in the US education system, provide a unique understanding of what Deep Learning means for students and teachers in the context of the US. With this knowledge and understanding, The Learner First held workshops with districts from NWESD and PSESD that engaged educators, principals and superintendents in capacity building to help with implementation. Each capacity building experience for teachers, leaders and superintendents provided the next step into inquiring into their own practice and creating system-wide changes.
